Long after the events of Desiree 1519, we find Risk, now known as Risque, in Paris in 1910. He’s a player with an elegant apartment on the Champs Elysees. His best friend is Sante, a Brazilian aviator who dominated the era of dirigibles, but wants Risque’s help with heavier than air machines called aeroplanes.
It seems Risque just wants to party with his girlfriend Collet, a notorious storyteller and showrunner at the Moulin Rouge, who clashes with Jules the gangster owner over her girl on girl shows that attract unwanted attention from the police. Her top dancer Gigi is the favorite model of the Impressionists and the Cubists and Sante’s girlfriend. Another of her dancers, Camille is the girlfriend of Gaston, whose massive tower dominates the skyline, although he’s now more interested in his wind tunnel beneath where he studies aerodynamics. Despite Gaston’s help, Sante is becoming a has-been among the French aviators led by Blurod who are beating him in the races organized by the Aero Club de Paris.
Then two Russian ballerinas come to Paris. Tiara is a girl from the streets of Moscow who is slated to dance the role of the Firewing, if only Ivan the Russian composer could finish the score for the Ballet Rouge being financed by Lucien, the top jeweler in Paris. Rambam is a ballerina from an aristocratic Russian family who Tiara keeps under her thumb as her understudy. Once Risque sees Rambam, the roulette wheel is set in motion and no one knows where the ball is going to land.
She inspires him to get serious about helping Sante compete against Blurod and the other French aviators, but they have tricks up their sleeve. Tiara’s secret skills with flying machines may give Sante an edge and get her a share of his company. But Risque’s obsession for Rambam threatens Tiara’s role as prima ballerina, driving Tiara to use some kinky tactics to try to break them up. Collet is not ready to give up Risque or her audience share to the Russians, just because some claim the Ballet Rouge relies less on skin than the Moulin Rouge, but she goes overboard seeking attention, and incurs Jules’ wrath.
Who will win the air races over Paris? Who will dance the role of the Firewing? Who will Risque marry at Notre Dame Cathedral at midnight?
Augur and his Impressionists debate Paulo and his Cubists over these questions, among others, but the answers only get harder to find, as the wine flows in the infamous birthday party for their primitive friend Roulette at the funky Bateau Lavoir studios.
